This year’s Bill Green Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit has been won by St Saviour’s-based company Pet Technology Store.

Three local companies were shortlisted for the annual award presented by the Young Business Group (“YBG”) – Avenue Clinic, Ben Le Prevost Chocolatier and Pet Technology Store. YBG president Wing Lai said that each year the award attracted a high standard of entries, and that 2015 had been no different.

“We saw entries from various sectors of the Guernsey business market. Not only does this highlight the value of the Bill Green Award but also the diversity of local businesses.

“The quality of the entries was very impressive and it was difficult for the judges to choose a winner. Nonetheless, Pet Technology Store is a Guernsey success story – a leader in their sector with many applications to their base product which they are actively following up. The company has huge potential.”

Mr Lai added that the pet accessory wholesaler and retailer’s product is largely manufactured and assembled in Guernsey, contradicting the myth that it is not possible to manufacture products here because of the higher cost.

The award, which is run by YBG on behalf of the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce, is for new or established businesses which have shown ambition, drive and vision, often with a fresh direction or project.

This year’s Bill Green Award judges were Mr Lai; Carl Symes of Startup Guernsey; Fionnuala Carvill representing the Chamber of Commerce; Lindsey Dean, Vice President of YBG, and Gillian Mabbett, Former President of YBG.

The dinner was sponsored by specialist fund administrators IAG, with creative special touches including a ‘love potion’ for diners to enjoy during dinner. £1 from each bottle of wine sold at the Ball was donated to the St Peter Port Christmas Lights Fund.

Mark Woodall from IAG said: “IAG was delighted to sponsor the YBG Annual Summer Ball and to support the Bill Green Award. Online club promoter IBZ.TV has won this year’s Bill Green Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit.

The award is given out each year by Guernsey’s Young Business Group to a locally-based business that has demonstrated a desire to succeed, and the ambition, vision and drive to turn ideas into reality.

‘It was amazing’, said Russell Meakin, head of IBZ.TV, which operates online guides to destinations in world clubbing capital Ibiza. Since its inception in 2011, the website has grown from a simple information offering to one of the biggest sites in the world of its kind, attracting almost 1 million visits in 2013.

IBZ.TV was presented with the award at YBG’s annual Summer Ball, held at the St Pierre Park Hotel. The ceremony was watched by an audience of 245 at the ball, which was themed ‘All That Glitters’ and supported by Ravenscroft and KPMG CI, with a champagne reception sponsored by Saffery Champness.

‘It really means a lot to win the award, said Mr Meakin, we’ve all put in a lot of hard work in and to be recognised for that is great! I think we captured the spirit of the award as we’ve launched a unique business, aimed at another part of the world all from our home of Guernsey.

The ball was great fun and very well organised, the whole night was amazing from start to finish’!

YBG President Gill Mabbett said that IBZ.TV had caught the attention of the judges with a presentation on how a passion for something you love can be turned into a successful business.

‘Each year the Bill Green Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit attracts applicants from different sectors of the Guernsey business market.  The judges were impressed with the high standard of applicants this year and had a difficult task judging the applications and well put together presentations,’ said Ms Mabbett.

‘YBG would like to congratulate IBZ.TV and we look forward to seeing how the business develops in the future.’

The two other shortlisted companies, Storm Force Fitness and Books and Company Limited had also given impressive presentations, she added.

The ball is the centrepiece of an active yearly calendar for YBG, an offshoot of the Chamber of Commerce aimed at younger and young-at-heart members of the island’s business community. The group also organises regular networking dinners, drinks and field trips.

Local businesses who attended and supported the event said that it had been a great success.

Jeremy Ellis, Audit Partner at Saffery Champness said the company had been delighted to continue supporting YBG by sponsoring the champagne reception. ‘We also enjoyed attending the event itself, which helped to raise money for worthy causes as well as to promote the wider benefits of YBG membership’.

Jon Ravenscroft, Group CEO at Ravenscroft said:

‘We were delighted to be joint sponsor of the YBG Summer Ball 2014.  We are a local independent firm and feel our best asset is our staff, many of whom have been raised and educated locally.  In light of this, naturally we want to support YBG in its efforts in assisting the next generation of business professionals and leaders.’

Antony Mancini, Executive Director, Tax, at KPMG CI also said that it was a pleasure to sponsor the event. ‘The majority of our staff are aged between 20 and 30 years old, therefore we understand the importance of providing guidance to help improve networking skills and promote the sharing of business ideas. The Summer Ball is a great opportunity for the Group to showcase their achievements and catch the eye of potential new members.’

£1 was added to each bottle of wine bought at the event as a charitable donation to the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation. £202 in all was collected and added to a £500 donation from YBG. Jo Priaulx said:

‘I can’t thank the Young Business Group enough for their kind donation. Andy and I are always extremely humbled by the generosity of islanders. Every penny raised makes a huge difference to the lives of premature babies born in the island, and their families, each year. Without your support, the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation simply could not continue the work it does, so thank you again.’

Among equipment provided by the PPBF are incubators, hot cots, baby boxes and breast pumps. Baby boxes, featuring essentials and luxuries including hand-knitted cardigans and blankets and cosmetics for mums, as well as nappies etc., are given to the parents of all children that spent a prolonged period of time in the neonatal unit.

Most recently, a flat in Southampton was purchased by a supporter and leased to the charity for Bailiwick families who have a premature or seriously ill child at the UK hospital, which incurs ongoing costs.

Venetian Style YBG Summer Ball 2013

Nearly 200 guests gathered at the St. Pierre Park Hotel on Friday 14 June for the YBG Summer Ball.

The Summer Ball, this year with a Venetian masquerade theme, is the largest event in the YBG calendar. It combines the announcement and presentation of the Bill Green Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit with a 3 course dinner and live entertainment.

This year Fusion Leisure Limited went one better than their finalist performance at the Guernsey Awards for Achievement Gala Evening by winning the 2013 Bill Green Award.

Adam Burroughs, Director of Fusion Leisure Limited, was and remains overwhelmed by the win. “We are so proud to have won and it is such an honour. Along with the other short listed companies, YBG has helped to showcase the diversity of talent in business and innovative thinking in Guernsey.”

This year’s Guest Speaker at the ball was Jo Watts, Founder and Managing Director of Watts & Co, who spoke from the heart about her decision to set up her property consultant and surveying company. She also encouraged other local business entrepreneurs to believe and act upon their convictions. Jo said:

“If an unusual opportunity does come your way but which you find a bit daunting, don’t be afraid of seizing it with both hands. The average length of a small business may be eleven years but longevity can be attained by having a vision, remaining fresh and continually learning and developing. It is a journey: one that can be incredibly hard work and lonely at times but one that is unquestionably wholly worthwhile.”

The sponsors of the event were The Learning Company Ltd, winner of the Bill Green Award in 2012, and KRyS Global.

YBG was delighted to support local charity Friends of Frossard Children’s Ward, with £1 being donated from every bottle of wine sold on the night.

Liz Hodder, President of the YBG, said that the ball had been a huge success.

“The YBG Summer Ball continues to grow in attendance and stature with very positive feedback from members and their guests.” said Liz. “The Bill Green Award is approaching its 18th anniversary in 2014 and I am delighted that as a business association we have put the effort in to raise the award’s profile to the level where companies are really keen and enthusiastic about entering.”

Liz also wished to congratulate Bumblebee Marine Ltd and Storm Force Fitness who were short listed for the award, and to thank all the businesses which entered for the award this year.
