To celebrate and recognise International Day of People with disability on the 3 December (the day that the Christmas lights are switched on) the YBG, in association with our sponsors Jacksons Garage, would like to give the opportunity to all Guernsey children with disabilities to enter a competition. The winner will help Father Christmas switch on the lights in Town Church Square on the 3rd of December!
The Competition
- Create an imaginative drawing, picture collage or poem showing or describing the Guernsey Christmas Lights and the magic that they produce.
- All entries to be submitted between the 19 November and the 25th of November.
How to Enter
- All works to be posted on the YBG Guernsey Facebook page between the 19th November and the 26th November.
- Work must include the name of the parent or guardian of the child entering.
- A follow on email to [email protected] with contact details of the parent and the name and age of the child to follow posting on Facebook. Please also provide the details of the child’s special needs as well. This will help us identify any accessibility requirements. We are in contact with the GDA and Wigwam who will be providing advice and guidance.
The Prize
1st Prize – Representing all Guernsey children who live with a disability, you will meet with Father Christmas in Town Church Square and help him to switch on the Christmas Lights. You and your parents/guardians will also be invited to join the runners up to watch the parade in an especially reserved accessible space close to the stage.
5 runners up – You and your parents/guardians will be invited to watch the switch on and parade in a specially reserved accessible space close to the stage.
Note for Parents
Siblings
Siblings are more than welcome. Please detail all attendees (child, siblings, and parents/guardians) in your entrance email so we can plan the numbers.
Access
Town church square gets very busy and noisy during the switch on parade. A space close to the stage with appropriate access will be made available. However, it would be best to arrive early as providing an easy entrance will prove difficult after 3pm due to the sheer number of people attending the event and the restricted space available next to town church. We are considering the planning for next year to make this an even more accessible event as the current arrangements are tight. As such, if you do not feel you or your child would be comfortable waiting in the winter weather from 3pm to around 5.30pm this event may not be appropriate for you.
