YBG has had another very successful year. We have put on some very popular events. Our membership continues to grow – averaging 4 or 5 new members every month. We now have over 100 members, from a diverse cross-section of the business sector.
This year I wanted to focus on improving networking opportunities for our members. We introduced an attendance list for all of our events, which is available on the events pages of our website. This has proved very popular, providing an opportunity for people to consider in advance who they would like to network with. We also introduced a ‘tips for networking’ page on our website.
One of the biggest changes this year has been with the implementation of our new website, which we are very proud of. We are constantly developing use of our website to fit the needs of our organisation, including online membership directory, news section and tips for networking, in addition to regular features. We have increased our online presence – including through use of our website and active use of our social media accounts.
Bill Green Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit
We started the year with applications being received for the Bill Green Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit. The Award recognises businesses which have demonstrated a desire to succeed and the ambition, vision and drive to turn ideas into a successful business Competition for the award increases year on year, and we have similarly sought to increase the profile of the award. The nominated businesses were Bumble Bee Marine, Storm Force Fitness and Fusion Leisure, with Fusion Leisure winning the award.
YBG Summer Ball
The Summer Ball last year had an elegant masquerade theme. Our guest speaker for the evening was Jo Watts, Founder of Watts & Co. Jo gave an interesting and informative talk to us about the challenges faced in starting up her own business. The evening also show-cased the Bill Green Award, with video clips of the nominated entrants. We had some great feedback on the evening.
This year we have had some really interesting, and often passionate, speakers this year, including Boley Smillie, CEO of Guernsey Post, Karen Meagher, Senior Tax Administrator at Saffery Champness, the Bill Green Award nominees, Fiona Le Poidevin, CEO of Guernsey Finance, David Falla who talked about the Town and Bridge Visions and Lee Murphy of HTC Group. Our networking evenings have included a tour of Meadow Court Farm with Ray Watts, a cocktail making session and wine tasting.
We are also delighted to contribute a regular article in Contact, focusing on YBG members and local talent within the business sector. Contact is produced bi-monthly. 4,000 copies are produced and distributed to all industry leaders, professionals and key personnel. Our articles, together with the online editions of Contact magazine, can be found on our website.
